Three times a day, at the Nikkō Sarun Gundan theater, monkey trainer Yayushi performs with his monkey Hiroshi . Hiroshi misbehaves while being dressed up as Elsa from Disney's Frozen, so Yayushi reprimands corrects the well trained monkey. This commercial form of monkey entertainment derived from the traditional performance art Sarumawashi which has been around for more than 1200 years. While traditional Sarumawashi still exists today, the appeal of the modern performances lie in the anthropomorphic appearance of the monkeys, which are invariably dressed in costumes and walk on two legs. The circus-like performances are a mixture of gymnastic accomplishment and slapstick humor, and audiences both applaud the achievements of the monkeys and laugh at the obvious shortcomings in their human role-play.
